The philosophy and core principals of the Landmark Education Company are those which centre around the concept of so-called ‘transformative’ learning, rather than the standard concept of informative learning. Informative learning, also known as ‘additive’ learning is the process whereby a person increases their knowledge or skills, extending their current capacities by way of taking on new knowledge in order that they may further build their frames of reference and overall world views. Transformative learning, on the other hand, is a term which refers to the process which gives the individual a basic awareness of the structures within which they think and act in the real world. As such, the awareness breeds something of a shift which allows the person to exist entirely within their own possibilities, rather than the boundaries and limitations of others. This shift is the single most important and powerful aspect of the Landmark Forum and other such programs provided by the company. Those who successfully complete the course are left with the ability both think and act far beyond the limits they had originally set themselves, including those affecting personal, domestic and professional lives.
While standard, traditional methods of education are known to leave a person trying to remember concepts taught and how they should best be applied, the teachings of Landmark are geared toward applying skills and knowledge learned without the need to apply any deep level of thought. It is a little akin to riding a bike, in that once the skill has been picked up, it stays with the person forever.
